Leadership Calaveras

A course of community study sponsored by the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce and Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Harry Truman once noted that where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.

The Community Leadership program was conceived in 1996 following discussions between the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce and Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital. Both entities recognized that, in order to preserve and enhance Calaveras’ quality of life, careful planning and cultivation of new leaders was essential.

Leadership Calaveras is an interaction and learning program bringing men and women from throughout Calaveras County together to develop leadership qualities, and to identify and explore local issues and needs.

Class participants are nominated by their employers or request consideration. Class members are carefully selected to represent business, government, education, agriculture, health and welfare, the arts, finance, industry and volunteer interests. Work and residence in Calaveras County is preferred.

The Leadership class meets once a month for 10 months. Topics for monthly presentations include Health and Welfare, History and Diversity, Recreation and Natural Resources, Education, government, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Arts and Culture, and Business and Agriculture.

During each month’s program, time is allocated to study the dynamics of leadership. While each monthly program topic stands independently on its own merit, there is a growing awareness of interdependence. It is the complex interdependence of these variables which motivates a community to look to the future in a responsive and responsible manner.

Tuition for the Leadership Calaveras program is $750. The fee includes food, transportation during the monthly sessions, mailings and handouts during the year, graduation dinner and plaque. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory. Participants missing more than one session for whatever reason will be automatically dropped from the program with no refund of any portion of tuition fees.
